Kings and Coho on the Move Nearshore and Offshore
Lake Michigan - Mason, MI
Lake Michigan is delivering solid action for salmon anglers this week, with King (Chinook) and Coho Salmon making a strong showing from early morning into mid-morning hours. Most of the success has come from trolling in 60 to 120 feet of water, with the sweet spot around 80 feet. Anglers running spoons in blue, green, and silver patterns, along with flasher/fly combos, are seeing consistent hits—especially on downriggers and dipsy divers.
The Kings are averaging 12 to 18 pounds, with some pushing over 20, and Coho remain active in slightly shallower water. First light is key for the best action, but there have been scattered bites throughout the day. Water temps are ideal, and bait balls are showing up steadily, keeping salmon close to the main drop-offs.
Port cities like Ludington, Muskegon, and Milwaukee are reporting solid numbers, and charter boats are coming in with full coolers. Keep an eye on wind direction—calm mornings have been the most productive. If you're looking to land quality salmon, now's a great time to get lines in the water.
